When you have a domain name you also need to select its name servers so that it is connected to the hosting servers that house the data files of your site.
To put it into very simple terms, your domain name is the name of your web site, your hosting company provides the memory to store your site data files to enable them to be available on the internet.
After you have built your site and pointed your domain to the name servers at your host, you then upload your files, via FTP, and you are then online and open for business.

You also should choose a service that will allow you to have a monthly pay as you go and not a long term contract. A long term contract can be cost effective if you are certain you are going to be running your site for at least the minimum term duration. But if you are unsure if your venture is going to be long term, you should really look for a month to month contract option.
Choosing a service is pretty easy, and it is very easy to join and maintain.
When choosing a service, it is best to consider prices and packages available etc.
